Learn About The Various Topologies of SMPS Power Supply

The power supply is important for electronic circuits as the circuit cannot function optimally without sufficient power. In contrast, an exceeded power supply can damage the circuit components through the heating effect. Typically there are two options for the topologies of power supply: Linear Power Supply and Switched Mode Power Supply. The SMPS power supply in India consists of more components with complicated designs, but its
benefits overshadow the linear power supply.

What are the different SMPS Topologies?

Boost

This topology is best for non-isolation use cases. It aids in stepping up voltages due to the shunt position of the switch with respect to the input voltage. It also offers various catalogue options for inductors in boost circuits on the basis of functionality needs. Besides, the provision for the use of custom inductors helps with the dynamic designing of circuits for a wide variety of applications.

Buck

Buck topology generally requires a single inductor for single-phase application cases. It comes with an inductor in series and a capacitor in the shunt. Though buck converters offer high efficiency and power levels with poly-phase topologies, it’s not ideal for cases where isolation is required. It is ideal for DC-to-DC conversion.

Buck-Boost

This is the mixture of Buck and Boost topologies, making it an ideal option for step-up as well as step-down voltage uses. The flow of the drive circuit is slightly complex because the inductor’s connection to the main circuit varies as per the switch position.

Flyback

This topology has a transformer acting as a storage inductor for offering isolation. The transformer also provides variable voltage options by adjusting the turn ratio. Besides, it also creates the chance for several outputs.

Sepic/Cuk

The SEPIC and Ćuk topologies use capacitors for energy storage, including the two inductors in the circuit. These two can either be separate inductors or a single component as a coupled inductor. They are ideal for battery use because of the step-up or step-down feature.

Forward

It has a transformer with an extended buck circuit at the transformer’s output side. Therefore, it’s also called a transformer-isolated buck converter. These circuits are flexible enough to supply high currents because of non-pulsating output currents.
